10 Nutrition Mistakes To Watch Out For In Your Diet | Plate of salad

Let’s face it, for us active women over 40, getting our nutrition right is key to staying fit and strong. We’ve grown up among all sorts of diet culture messages, and it’s time to tackle those head-on.

Proper nutrition is important for maintaining overall health and well-being, especially as we age. Many people have good intentions when it comes to their diets, but it’s easy to make nutrition mistakes that can hinder progress and negatively impact our health.

In this blog post, I am sharing 10 common nutrition mistakes and providing solutions to overcome them. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it includes some of the issues that have positively impacted my clients in the past.

#1 Skipping Meals

Skipping meals might seem harmless, but it can lead to low energy levels and overeating later. When you skip a meal, your blood sugar levels drop, which can cause fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Additionally, skipping meals often leads to intense hunger later in the day, increasing the likelihood of making unhealthy food choices and overeating.

Solution: Maintain your energy and avoid overeating by planning your meals and setting reminders to eat regularly. Prepare meals and snacks in advance so you have healthy options available. Including nutrient-dense foods, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, to keep you satisfied and energized throughout the day. Setting reminders on your phone or using a meal-planning app can help remind you to eat regularly and maintain a consistent eating routine.

#2 Eating Too Little

Eating too little can cause nutrient deficiencies and slow down your metabolism, impacting your overall well-being. When your body doesn’t get enough calories, it may lack essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. Eating too few calories can also cause your metabolism to slow down as it tries to preserve energy, which can hinder weight management efforts and energy levels, muscle mass, and overall bodily functions.

Solution: Calculate your daily caloric needs based on your age, gender, activity level, and health goals. Once you know your requirements, make sure your meals are balanced and provide enough calories. Try including a variety of nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet. Include healthy snacks between meals to help maintain your energy levels and prevent extreme hunger.

#3 Not Drinking Enough Water

Dehydration can cause symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and dry skin. It’s easy to overlook but has serious impacts on your health and well-being.

When your body doesn’t get enough water, it can’t perform its vital functions efficiently. Dehydration can lead to mood swings, impaired cognitive function, and reduced physical performance.

Solution: Make a habit of drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning to kickstart your hydration. Keep a water bottle close and sip on it throughout the day. Try infusing your water with fruits like lemon or berries which can make drinking more enjoyable and increase your water intake.

Setting reminders on your phone can help you to drink regularly. Including hydrating foods in your meals not only helps you stay hydrated, but these foods also provide vitamins and minerals.

#4 Ignoring Portion Control

Even healthy foods can cause weight gain if you eat too much, calories matter. Nutritious foods like avocados, nuts, and whole grains are calorie-dense and can lead to excess intake if overindulged.

Solution: Practice portion control using items like measuring cups or a scale. Balance your meals with a variety of nutrient-dense foods. Mindful eating and pre-portioning snacks can also help manage portion sizes and prevent overeating, supporting a balanced diet and healthy weight.

#5 Relying on Supplements Over Whole Foods

Supplements are meant to boost your diet by providing extra nutrients when your diet might be lacking or if health conditions cause a deficiency. They’re not meant to replace a healthy diet, but instead to enhance the benefits your diet already offers.

Solution: Focus on eating a variety of whole foods. Use supplements to complement, not replace, balanced nutrition in your diet.

#6 Emotional Eating

Stress or sadness can often lead to unhealthy eating habits, where we turn to food for comfort. This can result in overeating and poor food choices.

Solution: Develop coping strategies for emotional triggers, such as journaling, exercising, or talking to a friend.

#7 Not Eating Enough Fiber

Low fiber intake can cause various health issues, including digestive problems like constipation and an increased risk of heart disease. Fiber helps maintain a healthy digestive system and overall well-being.

Solution: Include high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes into your diet. These foods support digestion, help control blood sugar levels, and promote heart health. Fiber supplements can be helpful.

Solution: Most complete proteins come from animal sources like beef, poultry, eggs, and dairy. There are also some plant-based options like buckwheat, hempseed, quinoa, and soy. Some simple ways to incorporate complete proteins into your meals: switch rice with quinoa, add edamame to your salads, or add Greek yogurt into your smoothies.
